We’re now in the tenth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle site and wanted to update you on what has happened over the past month, as well as what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
Over the course of June, we have seen a huge change in the project. The new swimming pools now have been completed and filled and are on water test. The existing sports hall roof completed which has now released 1st fix drywall works and mechanical and electrical works internally which is well underway. External cladding to the lane pool roof has commenced in addition to the plant deck roof cladding.
Mechanical and electrical plant is now lifted and installed to the plant deck roof, with external cladding channels also underway to the façade of the new building. Internal walls to both outdoor changing areas and changing village areas are nearing completion ready for the next phase of works along with external services ready for entering the building. Solar panels have also been installed and completed on the lane pool roof.
Over the course of July, the project will be focusing on installing further drywall to the existing building, along with fire stopping and cladding externally.
Mechanical and electrical fix works will continue to the existing building and commence on the new building. Pool testing will continue and then they will be emptied to prepare for cleaning and screeding works to commence along with rendering.
External services for both new water and electricity will continue to be ready for connections this month. Completion of the outdoor changing rooms and village changing room walls, along with the commencement of walls to the pool areas.
June 2026
We’re now in the ninth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle site and wanted to update you on what has happened over the past month, as well as what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
Since May things have progressed well, with the new swimming pool slabs poured and completed, alongside continued works on the pool walls. Internally, a significant amount of blockwork has been installed in the changing areas for outdoor activities and in the plant rooms. Fire-protective paint is also being applied to the structural steelwork, with good progress being made.
The existing sports hall roof has now been fully stripped, and installation of the new roof sheets is underway. Preparation has also began for upcoming mechanical and electrical (M&E) works, which will include ductwork and electrical containment.
Over the course of June, we expect to see completion of the pool shells for both pools. The team also hopes to carry out pool testing to ensure there are no leaks, a major milestone for the project.
Work on the sports hall roof will continue towards completion, alongside ongoing blockwork for internal walls in the changing areas and partition walls within the pool hall. The installation of fire cavity barriers and cladding support systems will also begin.
May 2026
We’re now in the eighth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle site, and wanted to update you on what has happened over the past month, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
The Willmott Dixion team have been extremely busy on site with lots of development, including the commencement of work to strip the existing sports hall roof ahead of its replacement in the weeks ahead, as well as roof installation being completed for the main pool and learner pool area.
Groundworks have also made good progress, with the first section of the new main pool poured and the rest due to be completed in May. The structural steel works on the existing building are also now finished, with the secondary steelwork nearing completion as well.
In the weeks ahead the team will continue to pour the slabs for the changing room areas, external drainage and services, and to pour the shell of the new pools. The plant deck roof work will begin with insulation and final roof covering installed, and the existing sports hall roof will see the new stand and seam sheets put in place along with mechanical and electrical services. Internally, the new plant room and outdoor changing areas will see installation of blockwork and continuation of fire protection paintwork to the structural steel frame.
April 2026
We’re now in the seventh month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle site, and wanted to update you on what has happened over the past month, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
March has seen the pool hall decking sheeting installed in the new building, with the main pool and learner pool sump pipework put in place and tested. Concrete slab preparation work has also taken place for both the outdoor and indoor activity changing areas.
Underground drainage works have commenced for both storm and foul drainage, and the existing building has seen new steelwork installed to the front elevation. Structural alterations are now nearing completion for the new main entrances and reception area, with scaffolding works and safety netting being put in place in readiness for the existing roof to be replaced over the course of the next month.
Over the course of April, we will be removing the existing roof sheet to the sports hall and first floor areas and installing the new roof. In addition, the concrete slabs will be poured into the changing areas, allowing internal blockwork to the walls to begin.
Elsewhere, intumescent fire protection works to the structural steelwork will begin, alongside the continuation of the drainage and new internal steelwork installation for the existing building.
March 2026
We’re now in the sixth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle Activity & Fitness Centre, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
During the month of February, the team have completed the new build of the Structural Steel Frame along with commencement of excavating the new swimming pools and completion of the structural decking in readiness for the concrete roof slab. On the existing building, structural strengthening works are progressing well along with new structural openings for new steel work to be installed.
Over the course of the next month, works will include, the concrete roof deck poured into the plant area, in addition pool excavations and pipework installed, scaffolding systems for the new pool hall decking to be installed and preparation for the below ground drainage and ground floor slab.
February 2026
We’re now in the fifth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle Sports Centre site, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
The commencement of the steel frame construction for the new building is well underway, and steel strengthening works ongoing in the existing building. Along with commencement of structural alterations for the new main entrances and preparation work in readiness for the internal steelwork to the existing sports hall area. Foundations are now coming to an end for the new building and pool slab work is ready to begin.
The next phase of the project over the course of this month will be to have the new build steel frame erected and complete, along with the internal precast staircase. Works will then include profile metal decking for the plant deck roof and scaffolding and netting systems. The new main entrances formed into the existing building, including the installation of the internal steelwork. Pool slab preparation works, and internal drainage and ground floor slab for the new building will commence.

We’re now in the fourth month of works on the redevelopment of the Castle Sports Centre site, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
We are now pushing along with work on the foundations and external drainage for the new extension, to prepare for the steel frame arriving at the end of this month. Refurbishment, soft demolition and structural alterations continue in the existing building, alongside the steel strengthening works to the existing frame which are due to be completed in the coming weeks.
The next stages of the project will see the completion of the foundations for the new building and underground pool pipework, and the commencement of the new steel frame erection, a major milestone for the project.
Once structural works are completed on the existing building, mechanical and electrical service alterations will begin, along with the installation of new external handrails to the roof, ready for works to begin there.
December 2025
We’re now in the third full month of works of the redevelopment of the Castle Sports Centre site, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
During the past month foundations works have commenced for the new Hub along with storm drainage and attenuation tank installation. Works have also commenced on strengthening the existing steel frame and soft strip of the existing facility.
Works will continue with the pouring of foundations for the new building along with continuation of structural steel strengthening works and soft strip in the existing facility. Scaffolding works internally and externally will be due to start in the coming weeks leading up to Christmas for the existing leisure centre. In addition, we aim to install the leaner pool and main pool underground pipework leading up to Christmas.

November 2025
We’re now in the second full month of works of the redevelopment of the Castle Sports Centre site, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
With piling completed Willmott Dixon have moved on to the foundations of the new building, carrying out excavation whilst continuing to work on the site’s drainage system.
Specialist contractors are also carrying out planned asbestos removal on the existing Centre, ahead of its remodelling and development over the coming months.
During the next month groundworks will continue, ahead of the steel frame’s arrival in early 2026. The new pool tanks are being created, with remedial work on the current Centre’s steel planned for the start of December.
October 2025
We’re now over a month into full works on the redevelopment of the Castle Sports Centre site, and wanted to update residents on what has happened so far, and what you can expect to see in the weeks ahead.
Site setup has now been completed by our contractors Wilmott Dixon and works have started with the creation of the piling mat and piling being completed ahead of schedule.
The existing swimming pool facilities have been open as normal, with gym and fitness classes getting back underway in their new temporary home at Boston College on Red Lion Street. Spalding Indoor Bowls Club have been supported with a relocation to revamped facilities in Long Sutton, to allow their season to go ahead.
During the next month groundworks for the building will start, ready for the steel frame to arrive in early 2026. This will include excavation for the new pool tanks, work on the development’s foundations and the installation of a new drainage system.
