The major redevelopment of the Castle site in Spalding has recently marked a significant milestone in its progress, with the completion of the steel frame for the extended facility.
This means the full internal structure for the new Centre, recently announced as the Castle Activity and Fitness Centre following a survey of residents, can now be seen. This will include two new swimming pools, multi-sport hall, fitness suite, cycle and group exercise studios, health and wellbeing consultation rooms, a children’s adventure play area and updated reception and café-type areas.
With the size and layout and key features like internal staircases now visible, members of the project board were recently joined by key stakeholders, groups and users of the facilities to visit the site and hear about the progress being made ahead of its planned opening in early 2027.
This included representatives from project delivery partners Alliance Leisure Services and Willmott Dixon and leisure operators Parkwood, as well as Spalding Indoor Bowls Club, Spalding Volleyball Club, Spalding Horticultural Therapy & Community Garden Project, Tonic Health, Munro Medical, Spalding Cycling Club, South Lincs Community Swimming Club, Spalding BID and Halmer Harriers.
The £28.3million project, which began full construction in September 2025, is receiving £20million in UK Government funding alongside further investment from South Holland District Council and a grant of almost £1million from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation to build a new 3G pitch on the site.
Alongside the internal works and 3G pitch, the first phase will see a new outdoor running and cycling circuit and community garden put in place. Later phases will address the demolition of the existing swimming pool building, and the addition of a new outdoor multi-use games area, new outside children’s play area, splashpad, and additional car parking for the site.
With the steel frame completed the focus of works is now on the excavation of the new pools and accompanying pipework, as well as ground drainage and floor slabs ahead of the all-important ‘wet test’ in the coming months.
Councillor Gary Taylor, South Holland District Council’s project sponsor, said: “This milestone showcases the fantastic work taking place on this important project, as you can begin to see the new building rise from the ground and these improved facilities really become visible.
“It’s exciting that after so many months and years of planning and work that the community can now see the physical form of the facilities taking shape, and watch it continue to grow and develop day by day.
“A project on this scale does not happen overnight, but each stage brings us closer to delivering a modern, high‑quality facility that reflects the ambition and investment going into the Castle, Spalding and South Holland more widely, and I cannot wait to see it open for residents to use and enjoy.”
